In the days leading up to Christmas in 2017, a burst of gunfire shattered the morning quiet on a Bridgeport, Connecticut street, leaving a young man's life extinguished. Khali Davis, a 22-year-old Black male, was standing with a small group of people outside the Maple Deli Mini Market at the intersection of Kossuth and Maple streets on December 23rd. At approximately 9:55 a.m., a shooter approached on foot and opened fire, striking Davis.
Mortally wounded, he stumbled into the deli, where he collapsed and was pronounced dead by the time first responders arrived. The brazen daylight shooting was captured on surveillance video, providing investigators with crucial evidence.
The investigation into Khali Davis's death quickly pointed to an ongoing gang dispute. Less than a month after the shooting, on January 19, 2018, police arrested 19-year-old Jarod Hamilton in connection with the murder. Hamilton, a member of the Green Boyz gang, was charged with killing Davis, who was reportedly a member of a rival gang. The arrest was the culmination of an investigation led by the Bridgeport Police Department's Detective Bureau. Hamilton was taken into custody without incident and his bond was set at $1 million.
Jarod "Hot Rod" Hamilton's case proceeded through the legal system, and in December 2022, a jury found him guilty of murder and carrying a pistol without a permit. During the trial, prosecutors presented the chilling video evidence that showed Hamilton walking up behind Davis and shooting him three times in the back. In February 2023, Hamilton, then 24, was sentenced to 55 years in prison for the "cold, calculated, cold-blooded murder." The judge, during sentencing, remarked on the shocking nature of the crime that had rocked the community just two days before Christmas.
