On the evening of January 30, 2018, a young Black/African American man named Eric Heard, 19 years old, was walking from his family's home on Price Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to buy food. His journey was cut short when he was ambushed and shot in the head. Police officers responded to reports of the shooting and found Heard lying in the road. He was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital in critical condition and placed on life support.
Despite initial conflicting reports, Heard succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, marking the city's second homicide of the year.
The investigation into Eric Heard's death revealed it was not a random act of violence but rather a targeted killing rooted in an ongoing and violent feud between rival street gangs in Bridgeport. Investigators determined that Heard, also known by the nickname "Fetti," was a member or associate of the GHB/Hotz gang. This affiliation made him a target for the rival East End gang. The motive for the shooting was determined to be part of this violent gang rivalry that plagued the city.
A significant breakthrough in the case came as part of a larger federal investigation into gang-related violence and drug trafficking in Bridgeport. In January 2021, a federal grand jury indicted several members of the East End gang on racketeering charges, which included multiple murders. Among those charged was Keishawn Donald, who was specifically accused of shooting and killing Eric Heard.
In December 2023, following a trial, a federal jury found Keishawn Donald and three other members of the East End gang guilty of racketeering offenses. The evidence presented during the trial established that Donald had shot and killed Eric Heard on January 30, 2018. Subsequently, in February 2025, Keishawn Donald was sentenced to 270 months, more than 22 years, in federal prison for his role in the violent gang and the murder of Eric Heard. The broader investigation into the warring gangs has led to the conviction of numerous members and has solved multiple homicides and attempted murders in the city of Bridgeport.
