On a late Wednesday afternoon in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the life of 22-year-old Benjamin Bagley, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On March 17, 2021, at approximately 5:24 p.m., Bagley was walking home on Blackstone Street in the city's East End when he was ambushed and fatally shot. First responders found him suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and rushed him to Bridgeport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators believe the shooting was a targeted attack.
The investigation into Bagley's murder led police to process a large crime scene at the intersection of Union Avenue and Blackstone Street. Despite their efforts and working on several leads, a motive for the shooting remained elusive in the immediate aftermath. The case, which marked the city's third homicide of the year, left a family and community searching for answers. Bagley was remembered as a devoted father to his three children, a loving son, and one of eight siblings. He was described as someone who "always kept a smile on the faces of all who loved him." Having previously worked at a funeral home, he was studying to become a funeral director. Tragically, he had survived a previous shooting incident in 2016.
In January 2022, nearly a year after the fatal shooting, the Bridgeport Police Department released surveillance footage to the public in an effort to generate new leads. The video showed four males and two vehicles that are believed to be connected to Bagley's death. Authorities asked for the public's help in identifying these individuals. Despite the release of the footage and continued investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with Benjamin Bagley's murder. The case remains an open and active investigation, with police continuing to urge anyone with information to come forward.
