In the early hours of a Thursday morning in Hartford, Connecticut, a tragic sequence of events unfolded, ending the life of 34-year-old Hispanic male Miguel Perez. On June 7, 2018, at approximately 2:50 a.m., Perez was driving his car when he was struck by a gunshot to his back. It is believed that he was targeted.
Despite his severe injury, Perez attempted to drive himself to Hartford Hospital. His determined effort to seek help was cut short when he lost control of his vehicle.
The car veered off the road, striking a fire hydrant before crashing into the front porch of a house on Hamilton Street. Emergency services were alerted to the situation, in part by the city's ShotSpotter system, which detected six gunshots in the vicinity.
First responders found Perez in the wrecked vehicle, suffering from the gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Hartford Hospital, the very place he had been struggling to reach. Tragically, upon his arrival at the hospital, Miguel Perez was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the incident, the Hartford Police Department launched an investigation into the fatal shooting and subsequent crash. At the time, authorities had not yet determined if Perez was inside his car when he was shot.
