In the summer of 2019, the city of Hartford was struck by a wave of violence that claimed the life of 30-year-old Malcolm Carr, a Black male. On the late evening of Monday, July 8th, Carr was shot on Main Street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following morning. His death marked the 12th homicide in the city that year.
The investigation into Carr's murder unfolded over several months.
Initially, another man, Antoine Keaton, was named as a person of interest in Carr's death. Keaton was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Anthony Wright, a friend of Carr's, which occurred in the same area on Main Street just days after Carr was killed. Authorities believed both homicides stemmed from physical altercations. The back-to-back killings of friends in the same neighborhood sent a chill through the community.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in January 2020, when Hartford police arrested 26-year-old Rayshod Johnson. After a foot chase, Johnson, a convicted felon, was apprehended and found to be in possession of a loaded high-capacity magazine. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Malcolm Carr, as well as criminal possession of a firearm and criminal use of a firearm. His bond was set at a total of $2 million.
