In the Hill neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut, a sense of loss permeated the community following the death of 29-year-old Joseph Vincent Mattei, a Hispanic male with a promising future. On the evening of January 25, 2021, gunshots echoed at the intersection of Plymouth and Lamberton Streets. Officers discovered Mattei inside a vehicle that had also been struck by gunfire.
He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition and fought for his life for several days before succumbing to his injuries on January 29, 2021. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
Joseph, known affectionately as "Joey" to his loved ones, was a New Haven native and a proud graduate of Southern Connecticut State University. He had dedicated his career to helping others, working as a social worker with the New Haven Family Alliance, now known as the Urban Community Alliance. Colleagues remembered him as a genuine and relatable individual who had a unique ability to connect with the young people he served. Beyond his professional life, he was a devoted father to a young son, a cherished brother, and a loving son. His family described him as someone who was not afraid to take risks to better his life and who had a great spirit and soul. In a final act of generosity, his organs were donated to help others in need.
The New Haven Police Department launched a homicide investigation into Mattei's death, urging anyone with information to come forward. Detectives have been actively investigating the case, but as of late 2025, no arrests have been publicly announced, and no suspects have been officially named in connection with the shooting. The police have repeatedly appealed to the public for assistance, encouraging anonymous tips through their dedicated phone lines. The case remains an open and active investigation, leaving a family and a community still searching for answers and justice for a life cut tragically short.
