On October 10, 1938, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Chief Deputy Sheriff George W. Spencer, aged 31, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest an intoxicated individual in a tavern.

Following the incident, the suspect was apprehended and charged with second-degree murder. On November 22, 1938, the individual was convicted and sentenced to 21 years in prison for the crime.
