In the early spring of 2012, the Pine Bluff, Arkansas community was shaken by the tragic death of 12-year-old Quinshun SirKeyes Parks, a Black male. On the afternoon of March 10th, a gathering of youths at a residence on East Harding Avenue took a devastating turn. Amidst what some witnesses described as playful interaction, while others suggested a more deliberate act, a single gunshot echoed.
Quinshun was struck in the hip by a bullet that tragically pierced his abdomen.
Rushed to Jefferson Regional Medical Center, the young boy underwent emergency surgery as medical staff fought to save his life. Despite their efforts, Quinshun succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained, passing away in the early morning hours of March 11, 2012. The incident left a profound sense of loss and raised troubling questions about youth violence and the accessibility of firearms within the community.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, a 14-year-old male acquaintance of Quinshun's turned himself into the Pine Bluff Police Department. He was initially charged with first-degree battery and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. With Quinshun's death, it was anticipated that the charges would be upgraded to reflect the gravity of the outcome. The police investigation continued as they sought to piece together the precise circumstances of the shooting, hampered by the fact that the handgun used in the incident had not been recovered. The community mourned the loss of a young life, with funeral services held at Barraque Street Baptist Church and his burial at Henson Cemetery.
