In the quiet city of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a devastating event unfolded on the evening of June 7, 2021. Fourteen-year-old Janija McGown, a young female, tragically lost her life to gun violence. The fatal shooting occurred near the intersection of West 23rd Avenue and South Maple Street, shattering the peace of the neighborhood. Responding to a call at approximately 9:43 p.m., officers from the Pine Bluff Police Department arrived to find the teenager with apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite any efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the days that followed, the Pine Bluff Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the death of the young girl, marking the city's ninth homicide of the year. Initially, her identity was withheld from public reports due to her being a minor. However, she was later identified as Janija McGown.
The investigation led to a breakthrough on June 21, 2021, when authorities announced an arrest in connection with the killing. Vernon McCraney, a 19-year-old, was taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a charge of capital murder. The police also identified a second individual, 16-year-old Keundre Parker, as a suspect in the fatal shooting and declared him as wanted.
