On an otherwise quiet morning in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a family member's growing concern prompted a call to the police regarding a domestic disturbance. It was shortly before 10 a.m. on May 3, 2025, when officers arrived at the Park View Apartments on West 13th Street. At apartment number 23, they were met with a wall of silence. The occupants would not open the door, and the man inside, later identified as 54-year-old Melvin Sanders, refused to come out, barricading himself within the
residence. This initiated a tense standoff that would last for nearly three hours.
The Pine Bluff Police Department's S.W.A.T. team and negotiators were called to the scene to peacefully resolve the volatile situation. As the minutes turned into hours, the tension mounted. Finally, shortly before 1 p.m., Sanders exited the apartment and surrendered to the authorities without incident. He was immediately taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his hand. It was only after Sanders was secured that officers could finally enter the apartment to assess the well-being of anyone else inside.
Once inside, the police made a tragic discovery. They found 43-year-old Yashika Morris, a female resident of Pine Bluff. She had sustained apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by a representative from the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. Following his release from the hospital, Melvin Sanders was set to be booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a charge of Capital Murder. Yashika, a licensed insurance agent and a graduate of Pine Bluff High School and Arthur's Beauty College, was remembered as a vibrant and beautiful person who loved spending time with her family and friends. She left behind three children and a granddaughter.
