In the late morning hours of June 17, 2024, the city of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, was rocked by a tragic event that unfolded in the parking lot of a liquor store on South Cherry Street. Forty-four-year-old Mary Christopher, a female resident of the city, found her life brought to an abrupt and violent end. She was seated in her black passenger car when she was fatally shot.
The incident, which happened around 8:30 a.m., was a grim start to a week that would see the community grappling with multiple homicides.
Witnesses at the scene painted a harrowing picture of the moments leading up to the shooting. They reported seeing Mary's husband, 58-year-old Gregory Christopher Sr., standing outside her vehicle, engaged in a conversation with her. In a sudden turn of events, Gregory produced a firearm and shot his wife before fleeing the scene. Tragically, Mary's 8-year-old son was present in the vehicle at the time of the incident but was physically unharmed. Despite the swift response from the Pine Bluff Police Department, Mary Christopher was unresponsive upon their arrival and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The search for the suspect, Gregory Christopher Sr., came to a somber conclusion later that morning. At approximately 10:00 a.m., law enforcement officers, aided by a FLOCK camera that captured his vehicle entering Regional Park, located Gregory near the waterfront. He was found unresponsive in his vehicle with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Pine Bluff Police Department's investigation concluded that the death of Mary Christopher was a result of a murder-suicide perpetrated by her husband. The motive for this devastating act of domestic violence remains unknown.
