In the spring of 1999, a chilling triple homicide shattered the lives of a Phoenix family. Andrew Parks, his sister Shelly Parks, and a third individual, Eddie, were tragically killed. The events unfolded on a Saturday evening in early April when Brian Dann, the boyfriend of Shelly Parks, went to the home of a former girlfriend to borrow a. 38 caliber revolver.
He claimed that Andrew Parks had shot at him earlier that day and that he needed the weapon for protection as he intended to retrieve some of his belongings from Andrew's apartment.
Later that evening, Dann went to the apartment where Andrew, Shelly, and Eddie were present. Following a confrontation where he felt slighted and laughed at, Dann opened fire, shooting and killing all three individuals. The motive appeared to be rooted in a personal dispute that escalated to horrific violence.
Following the discovery of the three victims, law enforcement began an investigation that quickly pointed toward Brian Dann. He was arrested for the triple homicide on Wednesday, April 7, 1999. The legal proceedings that followed were extensive. On October 1, 2001, a jury found Dann guilty of three counts of premeditated murder, three counts of felony murder, and one count of first-degree burglary. In January 2002, a judge sentenced him to death.
The case went through a series of appeals. While some of the premeditated murder convictions were later reversed, his conviction for the first-degree felony murder of Andrew Parks and the others, along with the burglary conviction, were affirmed. The case involved further legal complexities, including a resentencing hearing by a jury, which ultimately determined that the death penalty was the appropriate sentence for the heinous crimes committed.
