In the line of duty, Phoenix Police Officer Ignacio Gonzales 'Nacho' Conchos, a 39-year-old male, was fatally shot. He had served with the Phoenix Police Department for seven years and was assigned to the South Mountain crime-resistance unit.
The tragic events unfolded when a man robbed a bank and was seen entering the Valley Squire Cocktail Lounge at 44 East Southern in Phoenix.
Twenty minutes later, Officer Conchos and his partner, Officer John Davis, both in plainclothes, entered the bar to search for the suspect. The suspect opened fire, discharging seven shots at the officers before they could draw their weapons. Officer Conchos was killed at the scene.
Officer Davis, although wounded, managed to return fire and hit the assailant. He succumbed to his injuries a month later. The suspect, a 25-year-old man, was taken into custody. He was subsequently convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and received a life sentence in prison. As of late 2022, he remained incarcerated. In honor of the fallen officer, an elementary school in Phoenix was named after Ignacio Conchos. He was survived by his wife and four children.
