In the vast, quiet expanse of the Arizona desert, a young couple’s love story came to a tragic and mysterious end. Nineteen-year-old Lisa Marie Gurrieri and her twenty-year-old boyfriend, Brandon Rumbaugh, were celebrating their one-year anniversary with a camping trip under the stars. On October 17, 2003, they borrowed a white Ford F-150 pickup truck and set off for a remote area off Bumble Bee Road, north of Phoenix, near Black Canyon City. They were filled with the promise of a romantic getaway, but they would never return.
The following day, when Lisa and Brandon failed to come home and Brandon didn't show up for work, their families and friends grew worried. A search was quickly organized by friends who had a general idea of where the couple might have gone camping. Tragically, their worst fears were realized when they discovered the borrowed pickup truck parked in a dirt area. Inside the bed of the truck, still in their sleeping bags, lay the bodies of Lisa and Brandon. Both had been shot multiple times.
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office launched a homicide investigation into the brutal double murder. The scene offered few initial clues; there were no immediate signs of a robbery or a struggle. Investigators were left to piece together the couple's final hours. A disposable camera was found at the scene, containing haunting last images of the smiling couple in the back of the truck, seemingly unaware of the danger that lay ahead. A video camera the couple had with them was missing and has never been recovered.

One person of interest was a man who was reportedly jealous and had feelings for Lisa; he was questioned and passed a polygraph test before moving out of state. Another theory considered a possible connection to a similar crime that occurred months later, though the suspect in that case took his own life before he could be questioned about the Bumble Bee Road murders.
