On the evening of December 7, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Racine, Wisconsin neighborhood, leaving a 41-year-old Black / African American man, Jeffrey Darrell Garrott, dead. Originally from Illinois, Garrott was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound in the 1000 block of Villa Street. The tragic events began to unfold at approximately 7:05 p.m.
when Racine Police officers heard the sound of gunshots near 7th and Villa streets.
Responding to the alarming sounds, officers canvassed the area. Their search led them, just three minutes later, to Garrott, who was found behind a house in a fenced-in area. Despite any efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing several gunshots ring out, and evidence markers later dotted the street, indicating where some of the bullets had landed. One neighbor recounted that their son heard the shots so clearly it sounded as if they were right outside his bedroom window, prompting him to call 911.
In the days following the shooting, the Racine Police Department continued to investigate the homicide, searching the block for additional evidence. They have appealed to the public for assistance, asking anyone with information to come forward. As of now, no suspects have been identified, and the perpetrator or perpetrators responsible for Jeffrey Garrott's death remain at large. The police have urged individuals with any knowledge of the incident to contact their investigators or to provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
