In the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, a sense of shock and grief followed the sudden and violent death of 28-year-old Jumaane Williams. On a Monday afternoon, just after 4 p.m., police responded to reports of an assault on East 32nd Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered Williams with a gunshot wound to his head, merely steps away from his own home.
Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene.
The community, described by residents as typically safe, was stunned by the brazen afternoon shooting. Williams, who was not to be confused with the public advocate who shares his name, lived down the block from where he was killed. The incident left neighbors unsettled by the unexpected violence in their midst.
Detectives are actively searching for two male suspects who were seen fleeing the scene on foot, heading south along East 32nd Street. Police have provided descriptions of the two men, both noted as having a dark complexion. One suspect was reportedly wearing a red bubble jacket over a black sweatshirt, along with black jeans and sneakers. The second suspect was described as wearing a gray sweatshirt and black jeans.
As the investigation continues, the motive for the shooting remains unknown to the public. Authorities recovered two. 380-caliber handguns and five shell casings at the location of the shooting. No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide as police continue their search for the individuals responsible for the death of Jumaane Williams.
