In the quiet community of Minden, Nevada, a tragedy unfolded on the morning of December 16, 2024, ending the life of 63-year-old Kathy Jean Weiland. A female, Weiland was discovered deceased from a gunshot wound inside a residence on Dennis Street in the Johnson Lane area. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at approximately 11:07 a.m.
regarding a man with a gunshot wound, and upon their arrival, they found a grim scene.
Alongside Weiland, authorities found 63-year-old Gregory Raymond Ward, the homeowner, who was unconscious with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Ward was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno in critical condition. Investigators began treating the case as a homicide, believing that Ward had shot Weiland before turning the gun on himself in an attempted suicide.
Four days later, on December 20, 2024, while still in the hospital, Gregory Raymond Ward was arrested in connection with Weiland's death. He was charged with open murder and murder with a deadly weapon. He remained in the custody of the hospital to receive medical treatment for his injuries, with no bail set. Authorities have stated that upon his release from the medical center, he will be transferred to the Douglas County Jail.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities have not released a motive for the incident.
