Kayla Harris, a 24-year-old female, had a promising future that was tragically cut short on the night of June 24, 2024. A standout basketball player at Spring Valley High School, she continued her athletic and academic career at Adams State University in Colorado, where she was pursuing a master's degree in business administration. The night of the incident began with a domestic dispute. Marshaya Harris, Kayla's mother, was visited by her ex-boyfriend, 48-year-old Eric Adams. An argument erupted between Adams and Marshaya, and when Kayla and her girlfriend intervened, Adams produced a gun. In a horrifying sequence of events witnessed by her mother, Adams shot and killed both Kayla Harris and Jeannette Faria-Webster. When a 20-year-old neighbor, Christopher Munoz, came from an upstairs apartment to see what was happening, Adams shot and killed him as well.
The violence did not end there. Adams then went to the upstairs apartment and opened fire, killing Christopher's 40-year-old mother, Amy Munoz, and his 59-year-old grandmother, Anna Munoz. A 13-year-old girl in the apartment was also shot and critically injured. Following the shooting spree, Adams took his ex-girlfriend, Marshaya Harris, hostage and fled the scene. She was able to escape in the early morning hours and flagged down a police officer for help.
After a manhunt, police located Eric Adams in a residential neighborhood. As officers confronted him and ordered him to drop his weapon, he turned the gun on himself, dying by suicide at the scene. It was later revealed that Adams had a lengthy criminal history, including prior arrests for domestic violence. Kayla's mother had an active restraining order against him at the time of the murders. The community mourned the loss of all five victims in a vigil held outside the apartment complex.
