Lloyd "Trey" William Gilpin III, a 26-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, tragically lost his life on September 15, 2016. The incident occurred in the Windy Hill neighborhood, where Gilpin was shot multiple times. According to reports, the shooting took place just before 8:50 p.m. in the 4000 block of Skycrest Drive. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Gilpin suffering from several gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to UF Health Jacksonville, where he succumbed to his injuries over the weekend.
The circumstances surrounding Gilpin's death were particularly harrowing. It was revealed that Gilpin had intervened in a domestic dispute involving his friend's estranged wife. The suspect, Carl Alan Allgood, 29, had shown up uninvited at his estranged wife's home, leading to an argument. Gilpin, along with other friends, asked Allgood to leave, but he returned later that night. When Gilpin answered the door, another confrontation ensued, during which Allgood pulled out a handgun and shot Gilpin multiple times, including twice in the head and twice in the arm. Witnesses reported that Allgood continued to shoot Gilpin even as he lay on the ground.
Following the incident, Allgood was arrested and charged with murder. The investigation revealed a history of violence and threats from Allgood towards his estranged wife and her friends. Court records indicated that Allgood's wife and her friend had sought restraining orders against him in August 2016, citing his violent behavior and threats. Allgood, who was medicated for bipolar disorder and had a concealed carry permit, had previously threatened to kill his wife if she left him.
The case garnered significant attention, with Gilpin's family and friends expressing their grief and calling for justice. A GoFundMe page was set up to support Gilpin's family, highlighting the unexpected tragedy that had befallen them. The legal proceedings against Allgood continued, with the community closely following the developments in the case.
