In a harrowing turn of events that began on a Saturday evening, the life of 19-year-old Preston Bell, a White male, was tragically cut short. On November 23, 2024, Bell was forcibly taken from a residence in the 500 block of S. Brookside in Independence, Missouri. Witnesses reported seeing him being forced into his own black Chevrolet Malibu at approximately 8:30 p.m. by unknown individuals.
His family, unable to contact him, promptly reported him as a missing person to the Independence Police Department. The initial reports also mentioned the possibility of shots being fired at the time of the abduction.
The search for Preston Bell came to a somber end the following day, Sunday, November 24, 2024. Just after 4:30 p.m., Kansas City police officers were dispatched to the southbound exit ramp of Interstate 435 at Truman Road. There they discovered Bell's vehicle abandoned. Inside, they found Bell in the back seat, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy would later reveal that he had been shot more than 10 times. The discovery of the vehicle and Bell's body shifted the case from a missing person investigation to a homicide, with the Independence Police Department taking the lead.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect. Steven B. Rock, a 23-year-old from Independence, was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and abandonment of a corpse. According to court documents, surveillance footage from the home where Bell was last seen showed three people approaching his car. Rock was allegedly seen pulling a person who did not appear to be moving from the driver's seat and placing them in the back of the car before driving away. Following a tip, police located the two other individuals who were seen in the surveillance footage at a house in Lee's Summit. One of them was also charged with abandonment of a corpse. During a recorded jailhouse phone call, Rock was reportedly heard saying, "The others don't deserve that. It's me," a statement that seemed to take responsibility for the events.
