In the late afternoon of October 2, 2018, a burst of violence at a gas station near the intersection of 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri, claimed the life of 26-year-old Kenton Branch. A Black male, Branch was one of two victims in a fatal double shooting that also killed 18-year-old Tyler Johnson. The incident unfolded around 3:45 p.m., shattering the day's routine with the sound of gunfire.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Johnson deceased
in the parking lot of the BP gas station. Branch, in an apparent attempt to escape the attack, had managed to get into a vehicle and drive away. However, his flight was cut short just a block south of the gas station, where he crashed into another car. After the collision, Branch fled on foot for a short distance before collapsing from his gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was later pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Kansas City police detained one individual at the scene on charges unrelated to the homicides. However, authorities stated at the time that they were not actively seeking any other suspects in connection with the double murder. Despite the initial police response and investigation, the case has grown cold. To date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in the killings of Kenton Branch and Tyler Johnson. The community and their families are left with the lingering pain of their loss and the unanswered questions surrounding their deaths.
