In the early hours of February 24, 2021, the life of 39-year-old Mitchell T. Wright Jr. was cut short in a burst of violence inside a Raytown, Missouri, apartment. A frantic, whispered 911 call from Wright himself at 1:56 a.m. set in motion a tragic sequence of events. He alerted dispatchers that a woman in the apartment had a gun and was threatening to kill him, desperately requesting backup.
Just four minutes later, another call came in from neighbors, reporting the sound of gunshots that had pierced their ceiling.
When Raytown police officers arrived at the Valencia Apartments, they observed a woman, later identified as Daizhane M. Redmond, leaving the scene in a red Ford Expedition. Officers conducted a felony car stop and took Redmond into custody without incident. Upon entering the apartment from which the calls originated, police discovered a grim scene. Wright was found lying on the master bedroom floor, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and face. He was rushed to Research Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation quickly focused on Daizhane M. Redmond. During a recorded interview with detectives, she initially gave a conflicting account of her reasons for being at the apartment. The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged Redmond with Murder in the Second Degree and Armed Criminal Action. Court documents allege that she knowingly caused the death of Mitchell T. Wright by shooting him.
