In a moment of escalating tension that tragically ended a life, Justin Williams, a 22-year-old man, was killed in Kansas City, Missouri. The fatal encounter unfolded on September 18, 2015, in the 6600 block of Monroe Avenue, stemming from what began as a dispute.
The situation took a deadly turn following a minor car accident. Witnesses reported seeing a silver Neon collide with a parked car on Monroe Avenue. Two men emerged from the vehicle and a physical altercation ensued.
At some point during the fight, Williams began to run away from the other man.
The assailant, who was described as wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt, drew a gun and fired four or five shots at the fleeing Williams. Emergency services found Williams on the pavement, and he was rushed to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A witness proved crucial in the swift apprehension of the suspect. They observed the shooter, later identified as 18-year-old Marqiveon D. Washington, discarding a gun and an orange hooded sweatshirt into some bushes behind a residence on Monroe Avenue before walking away. The witness kept an eye on Washington until police officers arrived and detained him. Law enforcement successfully recovered the handgun and the sweatshirt. Ballistic tests confirmed that the shell casings found at the scene of the shooting matched the recovered firearm. During questioning, Washington initially claimed the gun belonged to Williams but later admitted it was his.
Washington was initially charged with first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action. Just as his trial was about to commence, he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and pleaded guilty. In December 2016, a judge sentenced Washington to 19 years in prison for the murder and a concurrent three-year sentence for the armed criminal action charge.
