On what he described as a fantastic day, Jordan B. Smith, a 55-year-old Caucasian male, had visited his father and a friend and had plans for the evening. However, his day was cut short on the afternoon of Friday, September 13, 2019, when he was shot and killed outside a convenience store in the 3500 block of Independence Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Officers who responded to the scene found Smith with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to Truman Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His death was one of six homicides in Kansas City in a single week.
Known for his passion for journalism which began in high school, Smith was described by his sister as having an 'encyclopedia-level genius' and a witty sense of humor. His interest in journalism led him to connect with people from all walks of life, fostering a deep sense of compassion for their situations and a desire to give a voice to the unheard. In the years leading up to his death, Smith had dedicated his life to helping others, becoming a member of the Kansas City Peacekeepers, a group that advocates for nonviolence. He was instrumental in running a transitional house for individuals trying to get back on their feet, often giving away his own few possessions to help those in need. His family and friends believe his instinct to help and keep the peace may have led him into the altercation that ended his life.
The investigation into Smith's death led to the arrests of two individuals. Zaylen Z. Smith, 21, was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. An accomplice, Donavan M. Jordan, faced charges of unlawful use of a weapon and fleeing from law enforcement. Prosecutors alleged the shooting stemmed from a marijuana deal that escalated into a violent confrontation. The legal proceedings against both men are ongoing.
