The chaos erupted shortly after 1:00 a.m. on July 23, following a dance party that had taken place at a Knights of Columbus hall located near 82nd Terrace and Wornall Road. As the event concluded and a large crowd of young people lingered in the parking lot and surrounding areas, a disturbance broke out.
Authorities later described the scene as a sudden escalation of tension between groups from rival high schools, though the innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire had no part in the dispute.
Amidst the congregation of youth, a barrage of gunfire suddenly pierced the night, sending hundreds of people scrambling for safety. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots, describing the sound as resembling firecrackers before the reality of the violence set in.
