Joseph Zannelli, a 32-year-old patrolman with the Kansas City Police Department, tragically died on May 19, 1901, following an incident that occurred on April 27, 1901. On that day, Patrolman Zannelli was in pursuit of a man wanted for assaulting a streetcar conductor near 5th and Holmes. During the chase, Zannelli accidentally discharged his firearm, shooting himself in the right leg. Despite immediate medical attention, a gangrene infection developed in the wound.
