In the early evening of November 24, 2024, the promise of a life yet to be fully lived was tragically extinguished for Christian West, a 21-year-old Black male from Hyattsville, Maryland. Responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 7:50 p.m., Prince George's County Police officers arrived at the 5000 block of Lee Jay Court in Capitol Heights to find a scene of violence. There, outside the Hillside Heights Apartments, they discovered Christian suffering from gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical services were promptly dispatched, and Christian was rushed to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them shortly after his arrival. The news of his passing sent ripples of grief through his community and among his colleagues at Plumbers Local No. 5 in Washington, D.C., where he was a member.

The investigation into Christian's death was immediately launched by the Homicide Unit of the Prince George's County Police Department. Detectives began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting, working to identify a suspect and a motive. As of late December 2024, however, no arrests had been made, and a suspect had not been publicly identified.

In an effort to generate leads and bring justice for Christian and his loved ones, the police department announced a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to an arrest and indictment in the case. They have urged anyone with knowledge of the shooting to come forward, hopeful that a tip from the public will provide the breakthrough needed to solve this senseless act of violence. The case remains an active and ongoing investigation.
