In the early hours of April 7, 2019, a dispute fueled by jealousy escalated into a fatal act of violence in Capitol Heights, Maryland, claiming the life of 26-year-old Raymond Giles. Giles, a Black / African American male from Frederick, Maryland, was with his best friend, 24-year-old Trevor Frazier, in the 5000 block of Fable Street when the shooting occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m.
The two friends were ambushed in their car in what prosecutors would later describe as a 'planned
execution.' Responding officers discovered Frazier deceased at the scene from gunshot wounds. Giles, also suffering from gunshot wounds, was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to 25-year-old Rendell Markeith Johnson of Washington, D.C. Detectives determined that the motive for the shooting stemmed from a dispute between Johnson and Frazier over a woman Johnson believed was his girlfriend. Johnson believed Frazier was involved with her, leading to the deadly confrontation.
Evidence gathered by investigators, including a phone left at the scene and phone records, connected Johnson to the crime. It was also revealed during the trial that Johnson had confessed the murders to his then-girlfriend, providing details of how he had shot both men. Johnson was subsequently arrested and charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as related firearm charges.
Despite pleading not guilty, a jury found Rendell Johnson guilty in July 2022 after a trial that lasted more than a week. On September 15, 2022, he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders of Raymond Giles and Trevor Frazier, bringing a measure of closure to the victims' grieving families.
