On January 21, 2023, 42-year-old Marquis Demps was fatally shot at a Shell gas station located on East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Austin, Texas. The incident began when Demps entered the store and engaged in a verbal altercation with store employee, 25-year-old Yaseen Naz. The confrontation escalated into a physical fight, during which Demps reportedly brandished a knife. Naz responded by retrieving a handgun and instructing Demps to leave the premises.
