On October 1, 2024, 23-year-old Hunter Seth Joyner was found fatally shot in his residence on South David Street in San Angelo, Texas. San Angelo police responded to a call around 8:00 a.m. and discovered Joyner in a bedroom, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and legs. He was transported to Shannon Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigations revealed that Joyner had been involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend on September 30, 2024.
Following this altercation, the girlfriend, her mother, and her brother, Mason Taylor, 27, planned to visit the residence on October 1 to retrieve belongings and possibly initiate eviction proceedings against Joyner. Upon arrival, the girlfriend and her mother found Taylor at the back of the residence, armed with a handgun. Inside, they discovered Joyner unresponsive on the bed with gunshot wounds.
Evidence at the scene indicated that Taylor had shot through a glass door to gain entry and fired multiple rounds at Joyner, who was likely in bed at the time. Spent bullet cartridges were found on and around the bed. Taylor and his girlfriend, identified as 29-year-old Mollie Whitfield, left the scene before police arrived. Both were later arrested; Taylor was charged with murder and held on a $750,000 bond, while Whitfield was charged with burglary of a habitation to commit a felony, with her bond set at $500,000.
Joyner, originally from Perquimans County, North Carolina, was a 2019 graduate of Perquimans County High School and a former United States Marine. After his honorable discharge, he relocated to Texas, where he worked in auto parts stores and dealerships. He was a member of Hertford United Methodist Church.
The tragic incident underscores the complexities and potential dangers associated with domestic disputes, particularly when family members become involved. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to Joyner's death.
