Eric Torrez, a 41-year-old Hispanic man from Abilene, Texas, was tragically killed on July 21, 2017. Torrez was lured into a trap by a group of individuals who had planned to kidnap his juvenile daughter and remove her from his custody. The group, consisting of David Navarro, Stephen Lynn Jennings, Kristen Anne Jennings, Garry Lynn Jennings, and Angella Rebecca Wray, orchestrated a plan to capture Torrez and hold him against his will.
On the day of the incident, Stephen Jennings
contacted Torrez under the pretense of offering him a construction job, which was actually a ruse to get him out of Taylor County. Torrez was then held at Jennings' residence, where he was tied up, beaten, and ultimately shot in the head by Stephen Jennings during a confrontation. The group's intention was to find Torrez's daughter and take her away from him.
Following the murder, Torrez's body was discovered in a field along Highway 163 south of Barnhart. The investigation led to the arrest of the five suspects involved in the crime. Stephen Jennings, Kristen Jennings, Garry Jennings, David Navarro, and Angella Wray were all charged with capital murder, aggravated kidnapping, and tampering with a human corpse to impair evidence.
The case went to trial, and in December 2021, Stephen Jennings was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life without parole. The other co-defendants received plea bargains and immunity agreements in exchange for their truthful testimonies during the trial. The jury's verdict brought some closure to Torrez's family and friends, who had been waiting for justice for over four years.
