Ernesto Hernandez, a 28-year-old Hispanic man from San Angelo, Texas, tragically lost his life on March 19, 2019. Ernesto, known affectionately as "Neto," was a beloved father, brother, and friend who dedicated his time to his family, church, and friends. He was remembered for his contagious smile and joyful presence that brought grace to those around him.
On the day of his death, a San Angelo resident heard gunfire in an alley between Walnut and Bailey streets around 4:20 p.m.
The resident also heard a man yell "Don't do it," followed by two more shots. When police arrived at the scene, they found Ernesto Hernandez lying in the backyard of a northwest San Angelo residence, having been shot multiple times. Ernesto's fiancée identified his body to the police.
Gabriel James Ortiz Sr., a 44-year-old San Angelo resident, was charged with the murder of Ernesto Hernandez. Ortiz was found at the residence with a Glock handgun and was arrested on the same day. He was later released on a $250,000 bond but was arrested again less than 24 hours later on suspicion of obstruction or retaliation. Ortiz made threatening comments towards a potential witness while in jail.
In March 2020, Ortiz entered a plea deal and was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Ernesto Hernandez. The state also recommended a restitution of $6,875.34. During the court proceedings, a family representative tearfully spoke about Ernesto's life and the impact his loss had on his loved ones.
