On January 1, 2024, 23-year-old Jakob Andrew Jones was fatally shot in an alley near Fat Boss's Pub in downtown San Angelo, Texas. The incident stemmed from a road rage encounter that had occurred days earlier between Jones and 33-year-old Ryan Joaquin Renfroe. Following the initial altercation, the two engaged in a heated exchange over social media, culminating in an agreement to meet in person to settle their dispute.
In the early hours of New Year's Day, Jones arrived at the designated alley accompanied by friends. Upon his arrival, he exited the vehicle to confront Renfroe, who was waiting in his truck. According to witness statements, as Jones approached, Renfroe retrieved a 9mm handgun from his vehicle and, after a brief confrontation, fired two shots, striking Jones. Security footage from a nearby church corroborated that Jones was the only individual to exit the vehicle and approach Renfroe before the shooting occurred.
Renfroe remained at the scene and was subsequently arrested by the San Angelo Police Department. He was charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with his bond set at $750,000. In March 2024, a Tom Green County grand jury indicted Renfroe on these charges.
The trial commenced in November 2024, during which the prosecution presented evidence suggesting that Renfroe had lured Jones to the alley with the intent to kill, while the defense argued that Renfroe acted in self-defense, claiming that Jones had threatened him with a weapon. After deliberation, the jury found Renfroe guilty of murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of Jakob Jones.
