On August 16, 2024, at approximately 12:45 p.m., 52-year-old Corey Dushawn Waters of Oakland was fatally shot in the stairwell of an apartment complex located in the 3200 block of Adeline Street in South Berkeley. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but Waters was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an extensive investigation involving surveillance footage, ballistics analysis, and witness interviews, Berkeley police identified 42-year-old Darnell Amhil Anding, also
known as Marcel Amhil Bible and Saalah Odin, as the primary suspect. Authorities believe that an ongoing dispute between Waters and Anding escalated, culminating in the fatal shooting. Witnesses reported that Waters had previously threatened Anding with a firearm. During police interviews, Anding claimed that on the day of the incident, Waters entered the apartment complex armed and threatened to shoot him, prompting Anding to act in self-defense.
On September 15, 2024, Oakland police apprehended Anding in the 600 block of 23rd Street, an area recently subjected to homeless encampment clearances. Subsequently, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged him with murder and two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Anding's criminal history includes a 2013 robbery conviction and a 2005 conviction for cocaine sales. He is currently held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
The tragic death of Corey Dushawn Waters marks Berkeley's third homicide of 2024.
