Ronald Tsugio Tsukamoto, a 28-year-old officer with the Berkeley Police Department, tragically lost his life on August 20, 1970. Officer Tsukamoto was conducting a routine traffic stop at the intersection of University Avenue and Jefferson Avenue around 1:00 am. After deciding not to issue a citation to the motorist, he continued conversing with the driver. During this interaction, another man approached and joined the conversation.
Without any provocation, this individual pulled out a handgun and shot Officer Tsukamoto in the eye, resulting in his immediate death. The assailant then fled the scene in a waiting vehicle, leaving the community and the police department in shock and mourning.
The investigation into Officer Tsukamoto's murder spanned several decades. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the case remained unsolved for many years. On May 25, 2004, a significant development occurred when a suspect was arrested in connection with the murder. However, the Alameda County District Attorney ultimately decided not to press charges, citing insufficient evidence to secure a conviction.
