In the early moments of a Friday morning in Nashville, the life of Xavier Javon Taylor, a 22-year-old Black male, was cut short by gunfire. On January 27, 2023, just after midnight, police were called to the J.C. Napier Homes complex on Lafayette Street after reports of shots fired and people fleeing the area. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered the door to an apartment slightly ajar.
Inside, they found Xavier Taylor lying wounded on the living room couch, having sustained gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the apartment, and Taylor was quickly transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. At the time he was fatally shot, Taylor was wearing an ankle monitor as a condition of his release on bond for charges of carjacking and felony cocaine possession from an arrest in May of the previous year. Investigators have been exploring whether these past charges had any connection to the shooting.
The investigation into Xavier Javon Taylor's death remains ongoing, and as of now, no arrests have been made. Detectives with the Metro Nashville Police Department are actively pursuing leads and are working to identify the individuals who were present in the apartment at the time of the fatal shooting.
