In a quiet Nashville neighborhood, the evening of a January day in 2018 was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 15-year-old Thomas Howard. A male student at Maplewood High School, Howard was fatally shot outside his own home on Brookway Drive. The incident unfolded around 7 p.m., a time when families are typically settling in for the night. First responders rushed Thomas to Skyline Medical Center, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the senseless killing quickly pointed to a suspect who was himself just a teenager. Metro Police identified 16-year-old Kevon Mayberry as the alleged shooter. At the time, Mayberry was enrolled at the Bass Learning Center, though school officials noted he had not been in attendance since the previous November.
