In the spring of 2023, the life of 24-year-old Deountay LiDarrious Brown was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On the afternoon of Friday, April 14th, Brown was at his residence on Dodson Avenue when the fatal attack occurred.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded when a man, later identified as 19-year-old Henry Davis, wearing a ski mask, entered Brown's home for a brief period.
After exiting, Davis was seen getting into a maroon 2006 Lincoln Zephyr occupied by two other individuals, 20-year-old Marvin Menifee and 34-year-old Renata Lowe. It was from this vehicle that multiple shots were fired toward the residence. Brown was struck by the gunfire and was rushed to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The day after the shooting, Chattanooga police conducted a traffic stop and apprehended Davis, Menifee, and Lowe. All three were subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Deountay Brown. Each of their bonds was set at $500,000.
The investigation into Brown's death revealed a troubling detail about one of the suspects. At the time of the shooting, Marvin Menifee was out on bond for a separate murder that occurred in 2021. In that earlier case, Menifee was accused of the robbery and fatal shooting of Alfred Pitmon. While the legal proceedings for the murder of Deountay Brown are pending, Menifee has since been tried and convicted for the 2021 homicide. In March 2024, a jury found him guilty of criminally negligent homicide and especially aggravated robbery in Pitmon's death. He was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for that crime. Menifee, along with Davis and Lowe, still faces the first-degree murder charge for the death of Deountay Brown.
