In the spring of 2023, the life of Ashley Coyne, a White female, was tragically cut short in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On the evening of April 16th, an argument erupted near a homeless camp on Peeples Street. The dispute involved a man who was an acquaintance of 39-year-old Reginald Jamel Holland. As the altercation escalated, the man and Ashley Coyne attempted to leave the scene in a vehicle.
As they were driving away, Holland brandished a handgun and opened fire on their car.
A bullet struck Ashley Coyne, who was a passenger in the vehicle. She was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The man she was with was unharmed in the shooting. Authorities noted that the reckless gunfire could have easily injured other innocent bystanders in the area, many of whom were experiencing homelessness.
Following an investigation, the Chattanooga Police Department identified Reginald Jamel Holland as the suspected shooter. He was subsequently arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
In October 2024, the case against Holland reached its conclusion. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder in the death of Ashley Coyne. A Hamilton County judge sentenced Reginald Jamel Holland to 21 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting.
