Whitney Ashlyn Bertil, a 28-year-old Black female, was fatally wounded in a shooting that occurred in the 2300 block of Wilson Street. Chattanooga Police responded to the scene at approximately 12:18 a.m. to find Bertil with life-threatening injuries.
Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a local hospital, she succumbed to her wounds. Another individual, a 33-year-old male, was also found nearby with non-life-threatening injuries from the incident and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 8, 1995, Whitney had relocated to Ooltewah, Tennessee. Friends and family remember her as a sweet, caring, and selfless person who was deeply devoted to her loved ones. She was known for her big heart and outgoing personality, often described as the life of the party. At the time of her death, she was pursuing a dream of becoming a Registered Nurse and was a student at Cleveland Community College. Her untimely death left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved her, with many taking to social media and online tribute pages to express their grief and share fond memories.
In the wake of the shooting, the Chattanooga Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. However, details regarding the circumstances of the shooting have been scarce. As of late 2024, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with Whitney Bertil's death. The case remains unsolved, leaving a community and a grieving family searching for answers and justice. Funeral services for Whitney were held on October 5, 2023, at the Philadelphia Boulevard Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Philadelphia, followed by her entombment at Ivy Hill Cemetery.
