On May 25, 2016, the body of 26-year-old Bianca Horton was discovered on the side of a road in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The mother of four had been fatally shot. Her death was not a random act of violence, but a calculated effort to silence a key witness in a high-profile gang-related case. Months before her own murder, Bianca had survived a home invasion in January 2015 that claimed the life of her friend, Talitha Bowman, and left her then one-year-old daughter, Zoey, paralyzed.
Bianca was scheduled to testify against Cortez Sims, a validated gang member, who was accused in the shooting that had irrevocably changed her and her daughter's lives.
The investigation into Bianca's murder led authorities to three members of the Athens Park Bloods gang: Andre Grier, Charles Shelton, and Courtney High. The prosecution's case detailed a conspiracy to eliminate Bianca to prevent her testimony against Sims. A key piece of evidence in the investigation was a white van allegedly used to kidnap her. Investigators found the van's title in Grier's name. Cell phone data was also presented that connected Grier to Bianca's home, her places of work, and the location where her body was ultimately found.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Bianca's family. Courtney High pleaded guilty for his role in facilitating the murder. Charles Shelton died in jail from an illness a week before his trial was set to begin. After a trial that included testimony from numerous witnesses, Andre Grier was found guilty on all five counts, including first-degree murder and kidnapping. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Earlier, in April 2017, Cortez Sims was found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2015 shooting that killed Talitha Bowman and paralyzed Zoey Horton, receiving a life sentence. Bianca's murder highlighted the dangers witnesses can face and led to the creation of a witness support program in Chattanooga to provide better protection for those who come forward.
