On May 13, the 20-year-old Black female was in her apartment in the College Hill Courts public housing complex when she was shot in the head. Emergency services were called to the scene around 9:30 a.m., and Patton was rushed to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.
She left behind two young children.
The initial investigation quickly focused on her 22-year-old boyfriend, Taylor Satterfield. He was arrested and charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, and tampering with evidence. Satterfield's account of the incident shifted during police interviews. He claimed that the shooting was an accident that occurred during a heated argument. According to Satterfield, Patton had come at him with two knives, and in the ensuing panic, the gun he was holding discharged accidentally.
The case proceeded to trial, where the prosecution presented a different narrative. They argued that Satterfield intentionally shot Patton during the argument and then attempted to conceal his actions by providing conflicting stories to the police.
