On a warm evening in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the life of a young man was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Toran Sharhee Madding Jr., a 25-year-old African American male, was walking with his girlfriend and their dog on August 7, 2020, when a dark Ford Explorer nearly struck their pet. A verbal dispute erupted between Madding and the occupants of the vehicle, which then circled back.
In a sudden turn of events, shots were fired from the Explorer, striking Madding multiple times. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Chattanooga Police Department launched a thorough investigation into the homicide, which soon led to a breakthrough. On October 7, 2020, investigators arrested a 16-year-old male and charged him with criminal homicide. The investigation further revealed the involvement of a second individual, 37-year-old Montrell Crumsey, who was identified as the driver of the Ford Explorer during the shooting. Crumsey was also charged with criminal homicide.
Authorities later recovered the firearm used in the fatal shooting and were able to link it to the crime. The investigation determined that the 16-year-old was the front passenger in the vehicle driven by Crumsey at the time of the incident.
