On the evening of May 6, 2023, Sedrick Yarborough, a 43-year-old male, was fatally shot in Nashville, Tennessee. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Representative John Lewis Way South. Yarborough was walking on the sidewalk near Ash Street when he was confronted by a man who had been riding an electric scooter.
Surveillance footage from the area captured the events leading up to the shooting.
The footage showed a man, later identified as Reed Marshall Jr., 44, riding an electric scooter onto the same sidewalk as Yarborough. Marshall stopped his scooter about 15 yards ahead of Yarborough, and the two appeared to have a verbal altercation. Marshall then drew a handgun and fired at least two shots in Yarborough's direction, which did not appear to strike him. Immediately after, Marshall ran towards Yarborough and fired several more times. Yarborough sustained at least two gunshot wounds and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died.
Witnesses at the scene identified Marshall, who fled on the scooter after the shooting. Detectives with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department's Specialized Investigations Division located and arrested Marshall near his residence on Dr. D.B. Todd Jr. Boulevard in the early hours of the following morning. At the time of his arrest, Marshall was in possession of marijuana, a digital scale with white powder residue, and several hundred dollars in cash.
Reed Marshall Jr. was subsequently charged with criminal homicide for the death of Sedrick Yarborough. In addition to the homicide charge, he also faced unrelated felony drug charges. Marshall was booked into jail and held on a $151,000 bond.
