In the late morning of a summer day in Nashville, tragedy struck an apartment on South 5th Street, ending the life of 29-year-old Eric Reed. On August 1, 2023, police responded to a shooting call at 10:21 a.m. and discovered Reed inside the residence with a gunshot wound. Emergency services rushed him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he died at the hospital.
The male victim's death was quickly classified as a homicide, prompting an immediate investigation.
Detectives began to piece together the events leading to the fatal shooting. The investigation revealed that two men had entered the apartment, and at least one of them was believed to have been an acquaintance of Reed. Shortly after their arrival, a gunshot echoed through the apartment, and the two men were seen fleeing the scene. The motive for the shooting was not immediately released as investigators pursued leads to identify and locate the individuals involved.
The investigation led to swift arrests in the days and months that followed. Just two days after the murder, authorities apprehended 29-year-old Sanchez Ballard, taking him into custody on a criminal homicide warrant. Later that year, on December 13, 2023, Specialized Investigations Division detectives arrested a second suspect, 26-year-old Rhyan Rawlings. Rawlings was subsequently indicted by a grand jury on a charge of first-degree murder for his alleged role in Eric Reed's death. He was booked into jail and held on a $250,000 bond.
