In the spring of 2016, a confrontation in East Nashville's James Cayce housing development tragically cut short the life of 20-year-old Ronnie Foxx. On the evening of May 9th, Foxx was visiting his girlfriend when he was approached by another man, Karlus Branch. The encounter, sparked by a rumor that Foxx had been in a fight with Branch's sister, quickly escalated. Branch, who later claimed he felt threatened, drew a handgun he carried and opened fire, fatally wounding Foxx.
Despite Branch's later assertions that he believed Foxx was reaching for a weapon, no gun was found on or near Foxx's body, a fact corroborated by multiple eyewitnesses.
Following the shooting, an investigation led by the Metro Nashville Police Department identified Karlus Branch as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Ronnie Foxx. The case proceeded to trial, where the prosecution, led by Assistant District Attorney Addie Askew, presented a compelling case. They highlighted the testimony of several witnesses who confirmed that Foxx was unarmed at the time of the shooting. The defense maintained that Branch acted in self-defense, but the jury ultimately sided with the prosecution's narrative of the events.
In May 2018, a jury found Karlus Branch guilty of second-degree murder and two counts of reckless endangerment for his role in the death of Ronnie Foxx. Branch was later sentenced to an effective term of twenty-nine years in prison. An appeal of his conviction was filed, but the judgment of the trial court was ultimately affirmed, bringing a legal conclusion to the case and a measure of justice for the family of Ronnie Foxx, which included his three-year-old son.
