In the early hours of August 16, 2024, the life of 41-year-old James B. Cox III, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Nashville's Edgehill neighborhood. The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m. on Deford Bailey Avenue, where Cox was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Surveillance footage from the scene was instrumental in identifying the suspect as
34-year-old Ronald Lamont Russell Jr. The video captured Russell shooting Cox multiple times, continuing even after Cox had fallen to the ground. Shortly after the shooting, Russell was taken to Vanderbilt by his mother for a minor head injury. While at the hospital, he was overheard discussing his involvement in a shootout, which prompted further investigation.
During questioning, Russell's mother informed detectives that he has schizophrenia. Russell himself claimed he attacked Cox under the delusional belief that Cox was responsible for his sister's leg amputation; however, her leg was lost due to medical complications. He recounted confronting Cox outside his sister's apartment, first attempting to stab him with a kitchen knife. A struggle ensued, during which Russell claimed one of Cox's two firearms came loose. According to Russell, he grabbed the gun and shot Cox multiple times. He later discarded the 9mm pistol in a nearby field, where it was recovered by police. Russell, who has a history of mental health issues and prior arrests, was to be charged with murder upon his release from the hospital following a psychological evaluation.
