In the early hours of a Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee, a dispute between two men escalated into a fatal encounter. On July 16, 2019, 26-year-old Larenzo Gates was shot near the corner of 17th Avenue North and Cockrill Street. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m., shattering the quiet of the night. Responding officers discovered Gates lying in the 1500 block of 17th Avenue North.
He was quickly transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and died.

Nineteen-year-old Jamontez Sherrell, of 16th Avenue North, was identified as the individual responsible for Gates' death.
