In the fall of 2014, a tragic and violent event cut short the life of 27-year-old Ricky A. Burgett, Jr. in Nashville, Tennessee. On the evening of September 21st, what began as a quiet night at his Welshwood Drive apartment ended in a fatal encounter. Burgett was at home with his roommate and longtime friend, Thomas Moreno, when their sense of security was shattered.
Two men, later identified as Aaron Dale Dodson and his accomplice Oral Patterson, forced their way into the apartment with
the intent to rob the occupants. During the course of this home invasion, a confrontation occurred, and Burgett was shot. The intruders fled, leaving behind a scene of violence and taking a young man's life. Moreno, while physically unharmed, was held against his will during the terrifying ordeal.
The Metro Nashville Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to identify Dodson, who was 22 years old at the time, and his 19-year-old co-defendant, Patterson, as the individuals responsible for the robbery and murder. Patterson was apprehended in October of that year. Dodson, however, remained at large for several months. Notably, at the time of the fatal shooting, Dodson was already out on bond for previous charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary from an earlier incident that year. His eventual capture came as a result of proactive police work during a routine traffic stop.
The case against Aaron Dale Dodson proceeded to trial, where the harrowing details of that September night were laid bare, partly through the testimony of the surviving victim, Thomas Moreno. The Davidson County jury found Dodson guilty of first-degree felony murder for the death of Ricky Burgett, Jr. He was also convicted of especially aggravated robbery and the aggravated kidnapping of Moreno. For these crimes, the court imposed a mandatory life sentence for the murder, ensuring that he would be held accountable for his actions. The sentences for the robbery and kidnapping were to be served concurrently with his life term in prison.
