On a Saturday afternoon in August 2023, tragedy struck in East Nashville, claiming the life of 17-year-old Paul Nicholas Reed. The young man was fatally shot in a field at the McFerrin Community Center. Reed had arrived at the community center in a vehicle with other individuals. After some time in the parking lot, several people, including Reed, exited the car. Shortly after, Reed ran a short distance before collapsing. The car then sped away from the scene.
Emergency services transported him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries on August 26, 2023. Reed was born on September 18, 2005.
The investigation into the shooting was led by the Homicide Unit of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. Detectives were able to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. This led to a Juvenile Court petition and an arrest order for 15-year-old James Tremelle Johnson, charging him with criminal homicide and unlawful possession of a gun.
In a significant development, James Tremelle Johnson surrendered to authorities at the East Precinct on the evening of August 30, 2023. He was brought in by a relative. Following his surrender, Johnson declined to be interviewed by the police. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Paul Nicholas Reed continued.
